{Elementary} Big Idea:: Virtues & God's Word

By the time children reach the sixth grade, we want them to understand and own these 3 Basic Truths:
  • I need to make the wise choice.
  • I can trust God no matter what.
  • I should treat others the way I want to be treated.
so they are reinforced each week.

We also focus on a core virtue each month. This virtue is supported by the weekly bottom line—the learning aim for the day. On the whole, we utilize Bible stories, a core virtue, and a memory verse each month while offering engaging presentations of the 3 Basic Truths.

A virtue is something God does in us to change the world around us. So as we explore God's word with your children we pray that they would remember these great virtues that God embodies Himself. And that when the time came that they would make the wise choice, know that they can trust God NO MATTER WHAT, and that they should treat others they way they want to be treated.

Here are the virtues they've learned so far:

October 2010
Initiative- Seeing what needs to be done and doing it.
In October we learned about Nehemiah and how he showed Initiative.  They learned that they, yes even 1-6th graders can be used by God to bless others.  From friends, to family to people in our local and global community.

November 2010
Uniqueness- Learning more about others so you can know more about yourself.
In November we learned about some very Unique people in the Bible who God used mightily (Deborah, Gideon, John the Baptist). And how God sent us the Holy Spirit who works in us to bless others!

December 2010
Joy- Finding a way to be happy, even when things don't go your way.
In January we learned that we can have joy because God keeps his promises, because anything is possible with God, because God sent His Son and because God has a wonderful plan to make things right in our lives.

January 2011
Determination- Deciding it's worth it to finish what you've started.
In January, we followed the lives of the Israelites from their lives as slaves to their wandering in the wilderness for 40 years and how many of them missed out on some really good things because they lacked Determination (deciding it's worth it to finish what you've started). We saw a great example of determination in the life of Paul especially as he suffered persecution and even prison, as he kept is eye on the goal to share the Gospel with all the nations.

February 2011
Kindness- Showing others they are valuable by how you treat them.
And this past month, February, we talked about Jesus himself said about how we should treat others.  From the golden rule "Do to others what you want them to do to you," to how we should treat our enemies.  We challenged kids to "Go Crazy with Kindness" this month and Do, Say and Give some thing kind.

Stay tuned for what March has in store!

Keep up the great work parents, of following up with your kids using the Refrigerator Door Cards. And please let us know how we can better partner with you and help you along your parenting journey. :)
