Sunday Outdoor Adventure Club!- An Invitation from a New Life Parent

Dear Parents,

I have been playing with ideas of how to connect families more at New Life.  With the first service ending earlier now and with my interest in science and nature I was thinking about trying to put together a once a month Outdoor Adventure Club.  My concept would be that we could meet in the shell room after first service and head to a park - Central Park, Forest Park, Juniper Valley, Alley Pond, etc.  Each family would bring their own packed lunch.  We could do a nature walk/nature scavenger hunt type activity, connecting it to an aspect of God's character.  We have a number of field guides - mushroom identification, edible plant guide, tree identification, bird identification that could assist with that as well as binoculars, field scope, microscope.  Then have a picnic lunch and then free time for the afternoon to hang out as long as you want.  Could also do some organized games if we wanted to depending upon where we were.

Is this something that there is interest for?  I would like to have a team working with me to organize this.  I don't think it will be very labor intensive, more having people know what the plan is for the day to act as leaders of subgroups once we get to the park.  This type of a thing works best in groups where there is not more than 7 or 8 kids.  If everyone could respond with a "yes, I am interested", or "no I am not interested", number and ages of kids, and whether you would be willing to be on the leadership team, that would be really helpful.  I am having Millie and Kelly send this out so please respond to me at skmoltz@verizon.net.  Would like to do the first one toward the end of April.

Thanks!

{Orange Conference} OC13 Fundraiser

Hello There!

New Life Kids volunteers and staff are trying to go to the Orange Conference in April! We will have the opportunity to attend workshops like Reaching Tweens: Effectively Ministering to 4th-6th Graders, Off the Couch! Developing a Youth Leadership Culture, Successfully Partnering with Parents of Elementary Kids and How to Teach Preschoolers Spiritual Truth. But to get there, it can be quite expensive. So we will be selling coffee from Land of A Thousand Hills and other yummy treats to raise money for the conference.

We need to raise over $6,000 to get staff members and Volunteer Leaders to Atlanta, GA to attend The Orange Conference!

We'd love it if you'd show your support by purchasing a bag of coffee and/or a yummy treat. It would really encourage our team!

Also, by purchasing coffee you are supporting a great cause. We will be selling coffee from a company called Land of a Thousand Hills. This company started out dedicated to the rebuilding and reconciliation of war torn communities in Rwanda deeply affected by warring tribes and genocide. Land of a Thousand Hills pays a fair wage to the farmers of Rwanda, helps them with their basic needs, and brings a quality product to coffee lovers.

Now, Land of a Thousand Hills has reached beyond the borders of Rwanda to bring dignity and hope to Haiti, Thailand, and other parts of the globe. They partner with farmers and local community leaders to develop the coffee into a sustainable income, pay a just Living Wage, and strive to further meet the needs of the people.

So this month stop by our table in the lobby and purchase a bag of coffee for yourself and one to give as a gift and just for kicks pick up a yummy treat as well. In doing this you are supporting coffee communities in Rwanda, Haiti and Thailand as well as helping our New Life Kids Team get to the Orange Conference. Thanks for your continuous support!

Here are the dates to look out for in February:
  • Sunday, February 10 (After all three services)
  • Sunday, February 17 (After all three services)
  • Sunday, February 27 (After all three services)

Here's a video about the coffee you will be purchasing and how it helps people across the globe:

Visit their website at Land of A Thousand Hills.

Here's a video about The Orange Conference we will be attending:

If you'd like to help us get to the Orange Conference in a more direct way, please email Milagros Valle at mvalle@newlifefellowship.org or call 718-424-0122.

Thank you for your support and encouragement... it is so appreciated!

{February Parent Cue} K-5th Grade Kids

(This month's Parent Cue download can be found at the bottom of this blog post.)

When sin entered God’s Magnificent Paradise, our relationship with Him was broken. God’s love for us was so great that He was willing to sacrifice to restore the relationship. God proved He cared about peace when He sent His Son to pay for our sins.

Peace is part of God’s character. And He wants us to reflect peace in our relationships with others. Peace is proving you care more about each other than about winning an argument.
Peace is more than just “not fighting” and saying the right things to keep people happy. Peace is living in a way that shows you care more about others than about being right. It’s about building strong relationships through mutual trust.

Kids Discipleship Process:: We Believe

Most kids for their entire idea of who God is and whether or not they'll have a relationship with Him before leaving 5th grade.

It's because of this that New Life Kids has designed a place where parents and kids can start meaningful conversations about what it means to have a relationship with Jesus. That place is We Believe.

We Believe is one of the first steps in the New Life Kids discipleship process.

So I want to invite you to take an active role in the spiritual formation of your children and join me for We Believe.

We Believe is for parents and kids (K-5th grade). It's happening this Sunday, February 3rd at 10:30am in the Yellow Room.

{Kids Under 2} November 2012 Parent Cue

Here's a little something for parents with kids under 2 years old.

{Toddler/Preschool} David's Story Pt.2

This month your child finished learning all about David. David's Story Pt. II- God Gives me Good Friends. The first two weeks of the month, children learned of David and Jonathan's amazing friendship. Then, they learned that David was such a good friend to Jonathan that he sought out Jonathan's remaining family and cared for Mephibosheth. During the first three weeks, preschoolers talked about what it means to be a friend, how to help and serve those around them.

Finally, preschoolers celebrated God and His friendship this past Sunday. They danced and sang and praised their heavenly Father!

Last month (October) Toddlers and Preschoolers learned that God can help us do big things. Stories included David saving his sheep from the lion, Samuel anointing David as king, David facing Goliath, and David being strong in battle.

We want to help you teach your toddlers and preschoolers about God so we've made available this fun coloring booklet that we handed out last Sunday. This way you can color with your kids and review all of the stories they learned this month as well as those they may have missed!

Download your copy of the Coloring book HERE!

{Elementary} Family Activity- Individuality

Incredible!

As a writer, one of my favorite pastimes is a little game called Mad Libs. And nothing shows each person’s individuality than a Mad Libs story. No matter how many people fill out each story, it’s never the same! Anyway, when I was a little boy, long before Mad Libs was ever invented, my brothers and I would play a game that we called Incredible! In this game we would use pictures from a magazine to tell some pretty incredible stories. Now that I look back, I realize it’s a great way to discover your own individuality. So grab a friend this week and see how many Incredible! stories you can come up with!

Materials
Magazines (with lots of pictures)
Scissors
Paper bags
Markers
Paper
Pencils

How To
Clip 10 fun pictures from your magazines from each of the following categories:
1. Person
2. Machine
3. Place
4. Food

Write the numbers 1 through 4, each on its own paper bag. Place the magazine clippings in the appropriate bag – bag #1 being the Person bag, bag #2 the Machine bag, and so on. Write the following story on a sheet of paper:

The (describe one person from the person bag) flew in/on the (name one machine from the machine bag) to the (describe one place from the place bag) and ate a very large (name one food item from the food bag). He/she felt pretty sick after eating the (same food item) . So he/she (make up a fun ending together!) .
One person draws a picture from the corresponding bag to help complete the story. At the end of the story, everyone shouts, “Incredible!” and the already used pictures are discarded before the next person begins drawing to tell his or her story in the same way.

Let us know how it goes by leaving a comment below! Thanks & Enjoy!

A Letter from A New Life Parent

Recently a parent from New Life wrote us this letter about the Parent Cue's that we give out monthly.  I wanted to share it with our parents and volunteers because it's both encouraging and inspiring. Enjoy!

Dear Rosie,

Just wanted to reach out and say thanks to you and your kids ministry team.  Let me explain why I'm particularly thankful.

A few weeks ago one of your team members gave me a Parent Cue.  I've seen these sheets of paper in the past but this time I wanted to read every single word on the page.  I was particularly motivated because I had been thinking about what I can do with my kids as we observe our Sabbath.

The Parent Cue gave me great ideas!  My favorite one was how it suggested taking Isaiah 1:17 and singing it to the tune of "farmer in the dell" and then singing it with your child.

So first I looked up the verse and I started singing it to myself and in seconds had it memorized because of the tune.  I then sang it to my kids as we played and sang it to them as I gave them a shower and soon enough they were singing it as well!

We were also given immediate opportunity to apply the verse since my two kids started to fight over some toys.  Learning to do what's right came in handy.

So that's it.  Thanks again to you and your team!  But that one little act of giving out resources you made a deposit into the spiritual atmosphere in the Sevilla home.

Why Orange?

Some of you may be wondering. . . What's up with the Kids Ministry always talking about oranges? Why Orange? What's the deal?

Great question! Here's the quick version:

Thank You New Life! A Letter...

Dearest New Life Family,

This letter is for you. Yes you! We wanted to take some time to say... Thank You. Thank you for your generosity and support as we worked to raise money to send 2 New Life Kids Volunteers to the Orange Conference for Free. Because of you, it was a success! We still have a few more funds to raise to cover some miscellaneous costs but... WE DID IT!

{Elementary} What's My Kid Learning!?

Ever wonder what curriculum we are using for kids K-5th grade?  Well, wonder no more. We use a curriculum called 252 Basics. We consider it more of a strategy than a curriculum. It's all a part of this think we call THINKING ORANGE. But I digress.

What is it?
Elementary-age kids are in a constant state of discovery. Think about all the different things they are trying for the first time and what they’re learning every day, even how to make (and keep) friends.

How can we tap into the way kids are naturally wired to discover‚ so they can begin to experience for themselves who God is, how He sees them and how much He loves them?

How can we show them God’s big story and help them discover the active part they can play in this life-long adventure, to be more like Him?

252 BASICS curriculum and resources PROVOKE DISCOVERY, inviting kids to live out their new understanding of how to grow in relationship with God and with others.

Thinking Orange PROVOKES DISCOVERY in the heart of a child.

Here is an overview or the Big Picture of what we are teaching your kids using 252 Basics:

Why We're Going ORANGE

What's Orange?
Orange is what you get when you combine two primary colors—red and yellow.
If you paint only with red, you will get what only red can do. If you paint only with yellow, you will get what only yellow can do. But when you paint with red and yellow, you’ll get new possibilities, fresh solutions, vibrant outcomes.

We use the color orange to symbolize what it means to parent beyond your capacity. Orange parents understand that by tapping into a wider community, they have the potential to make a greater impact in the lives of their children.

For us Red represents families. The love a family can bring to a child. Red (familes) are a great influence on the life of a child. Yellow represents the church.  The church being the light of the world and also a potentially great influence on the life of a child.  Both the Red and Yellow have an impact on a child's life individually. But what happens when you combine the two influences? You can have new, greater and different impact on the life of a child.

This is what we at New Life Fellowship are devoted to. Partnering with parents to greater impact the next generation. We want to be your biggest cheerleader. To see the life of your child(ren) significantly impacted by the love of the Father and their family. Become an orange parent today!
